Chia Seed Fruit Jam

We all know how good chia seeds are for us, but there has to be more to do with them than just blending them into smoothies and making chia seed puddings. Some very smart individuals figured that chia seeds can be used as the thickening agent in making fruit jams! Instead of a tonne of sugar and pectin, a few tablespoons of chia seeds work a treat when making delicious homemade jams. Along with the world of benefits that come from chia seeds, what you have is some seriously tasty and most importantly HEALTHY jam.

Here is our recipe, but feel free to use any fruit that strikes your fancy, and adjust the sweetness level to your liking 🙂

You will need:

1 cup of fruit (your imagination is the limit here! Use strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, the list is endless)

3 tablespoons of chia seeds

Zest and juice of half an orange

1 tablespoon of sugar


  1. Simmer your fruit, sugar, zest and juice of the orange in a small pot on a low flame, adding a little water if the mixture is too thick.
  2. Once all ingredients are incorporated, take off the heat. Stir in the chia seeds, mixing so it is fully incorporated into the mixture. The jam will begin to thicken after a few minutes. The jam continues to thicken, as such leave the jam for about half an hour before you feel the need to add more chia seeds.
  3. All done, now use on toast, pancakes, ice cream toppings, smoothie bowl topping, or just about anything you feel like 🙂
